Independence of the Judiciary: From What, Whom and Why

Riara Law School held a constitutional law guest lecture on the independence of the judiciary. The lecture, styled Independence of the Judiciary: From What, Whom and Why, focused on the importance of an independent Judiciary in Kenya’s vibrant constitutional democracy. The upshot of the guest lecture was that for the political arms of government, namely Parliament and the Executive to uphold constitutionalism and the rule of law, and if individual rights and freedoms are to be respected, an independent Judiciary is indispensable.

The guest lecture was delivered by Ms Catherine Kendy Mutungi. Ms Mutungi is a researcher at the Court of Appeal, Nairobi. She is an Advocate of the High Court with vast experience in civil litigation. She has taught law at various universities among them Mombasa campuses of University of Nairobi and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. She is an expert in Comparative Regional Integration Law and the judicial process.
