Riara School of Business Students Excel at the Capital Markets University Challenge 2015-2016

The Nairobi County Capital Markets University Challenge ran from October 2015 to March 2016 targeting all universities within Nairobi County and its environs.The Riara University School of Business duo, comprising Susan Lekanaiya and Bill Kinoti, did us proud by taking the second an eighth position respectively. Susan, the first runners – up won Ksh 100,000 that she will use to buy a portfolio of shares listed at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) plus a 3 day visit to the Securities Exchange Commission and Securities Exchange in a competitive Africa Country. Bill on the other hand, won Ksh 5,000 that he will use to buy assorted shares of companies listed at the NSE.A total of 1,400 students drawn from 19 universities participated in the challenge that commenced in October, 2015.

The initiative had four stages;

Stage One- 19/10/2015:
The challenge took place at each participating University premises. Sixty students registered and participated from Riara University School of Business.

Stage Two- 20/11/2015:
The challenge involved research on a topic of choice and making a presentation to a panel of judges and student audience. This took place at each participating University premises. At Riara University, the presentations took place in Room 1/5 from 11.00 am to 2:00pm where twelve students participated. Bill Kinoti and Susan Lekanaiya were then selected to represent RU in the county challenge facing up with other universities’ representatives.

Stage Three- 23-24/02/2016:
Bill Kinoti and Susan Lekanaiya represented Riara University in the Semi-Finals that were held at Capital Markets Authority premises in Upper hill. The two succeeded to go to the Grand Finale.

Stage Four- 23/03/2016:
The Grand Finale was held at a Hilton hotel. Susan Lekanaiya and Bill Kinoti emerged position 2 and 8 respectively.
The prizes won included:

Grand Winner:
* Ksh. 150,000 to buy a portfolio of shares listed at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE).
* Visit the Securities Exchange Commissions and the Securities Exchange in a competitive African country for three days.
* The winner’s university received books and capital markets literature worth Ksh.75,000.

First runners- up:

*Ksh. 100,000 to buy a portfolio of shares listed at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE).
* Visit to the Securities Exchange Commissions and the Securities Exchange in a competitive African country for three days.

Second runners-up:

* Ksh. 50,000 to buy a portfolio of shares listed at the Nairobi Securities Exchange.
* Visit to the Securities Exchange Commissions and the Securities Exchange in a competitive African country for three days.

The 4th -12th Participants received Ksh 5,000 each to buy a portfolio shares listed at the Nairobi Securities Exchange.

All participants received a certificate of participation.
